via People MagazineApolo started competing and being noticed. After much battling, his dad convinced him to go to an Olympic Training Program in Lake Placid, NY. But Apolo spent the summer of ‘97 at home with his old gang, gaining 25 lbs. He placed last in the Olympic Trials.
Dad said, “Apolo, I don’t care that you didn’t make the team. This is what I care about: You are throwing away an opportunity that doesn’t happen to many people. You have found your passion, your craft. Let it blossom.” He was talking about speed skating. And so much more.
